It's advertised all over television. It's distributed by Ingram--one of the largest book distributors in the world . It's sold over the counters of the glitzy, high profile retail centers of bookselling giants like Waldenbooks, Crown Books, Barnes & Noble, B. Dalton--in fact, "wherever fine books are sold."
.....</FONT>It's "S<FONT SIZE=-1>CIENTOLOGY: A N<FONT SIZE=-1>EW S<FONT SIZE=-1>LANT ON L<FONT SIZE=-1>IFE." And right there on the cover, as big as the title, is a name which appears to be the name of the sole author: "L. Ron Hubbard."
.....Which means he is the sole author, right?
.....Wrong, according to records of the Library of Congress.
.....According to those records, the book currently being advertised and sold is a new edition, with new material, and the author of the new material is not L. Ron Hubbard, but is
"Church of Scientology International (CSI), employer for hire." So how can it say "L. Ron Hubbard," right there on the cover? Well, according to the Library of Congress, the name "L. Ron Hubbard" has been made part of the title!
.....But see that for yourself in the sidebar at right, exactly as it appears in Library of Congress records.
.....You'll note that Norman F.
Starkey, claimant for this 1988 copyright filing, was "d.b.a." (doing business as) the "L. Ron Hubbard Library." But if you've read our What's Behind the L. Ron Hubbard Library?  page, you know that it's the Church of Spiritual Technology (CST) that is currently doing business as the "L. Ron Hubbard Library," and currently owns ALL the copyrights. Confusing? You betcha'.
.....You can make more sense out of it all by seeing the actual d.b.a. papers, and by seeing How CST Grabbed the Copyrights.

Changing L. Ron Hubbard's writings has a dirty-word description within Scientology: it's called "squirreling."

.....Hubbard himself was adamant about it: he said, "The...public must not be led to believe that I have written or issued things I have not." But are people being led to believe that he has written or issued things he has not? Are his works being "squirreled"?
.....To find out, we did a side-by-side comparison of two versions of "New Slant on Life." We compared the earliest version we could find with the new edition being advertised now and sold in retail bookstores.
.....VERSION ONE is the version originally authored by L. Ron Hubbard. It says right on the cover, "by L. Ron Hubbard." It was copyrighted in 1965 by L. Ron Hubbard. He
is listed with the Library of Congress as the author.

.....VERSION TWO is a version first copyrighted in 1988--two years after L. Ron Hubbard died. The Library of Congress shows L. Ron Hubbard's name as part of the TITLE; the author that is listed (for New Matter) is NOT L. Ron Hubbard--it is "Church of Scientology International."
.....Our comparison turned up some differences we thought you ought to know about. So we've included some of  them below to illustrate just a few of those differences side-by-side. In the examples below, read the original version as written by L. Ron Hubbard, and then read the "improvements" contributed by un-named writers who were hired by the Church of Scientology International. Is the public being led to believe L. Ron Hubbard has written things that he hasn't written? You decide!

Actually a little child derives all of his "how" of life from the grace he puts upon life. Actually, a little child derives all of his pleasure in life from the grace he puts upon life.
They're looking for something, but the odd part of it is, the only time they ever find something is when they put it there first.  Now, this doesn't sound very plausible, but it's quite true. They're looking for something, but the odd part of it is, the only time they ever find something is when they put it there first.  Now, this doesn't seem very creditable, but it's quite true.
And here you have somebody who is happy, who is cheerful, who is strong, who finds that most things are pleasurable; and what do we discover in this person? We find out that he is making life, and here is actually a single difference: are you making life or is life making you? And here you have somebody who is happy, who is cheerful, who is strong, who finds that there is something worth doing in life, and what do we discover in this person? We find out that he is making life, and there is actually a single difference: Are you making life, or is life making you?
Of course, you will have difficulty if this child of yours has already been trained, controlled, ordered about, denied his own possessions.  In mid-flight, you change your tactics.  You try to give him his freedom.  He's so suspicious of you he will have a terrible time trying to adjust.  The transition period will be difficult.  But, at the end of it, you'll have a well ordered, sociable child, thoughtful of you and, very important to you, a child who loves you. .....Not only are there subtle contextual changes in the book, there are eight (8) chapters that were in the original edition which have been completely expunged from the current edition. But there are 12 new chapters that were not in the original book. Could some or all of these be the "some text" that is referred to in the Library of Congress abstract?
.....Despite these changes, there is no mention anywhere on the outside packaging, or in any of the advertising, that would alert a potential buyer of the book.
.....And it may be far bigger than just this one book.
....."New Slant on Life" is just one amongst at least 913 titles in Library of Congress records with the author listed as "Church of Scientology International, employer for hire." The "new matter" for many of those works includes writing, editing, and compilation, strongly suggesting that they each have been changed in some way from the original works. You may be surprised at some of the titles on that list (including the venerable "Dianetics: The Modern Science of Mental Health"), so we selected a few samples from the Library of Congress records and put them here on the site.

WHO IS BEHIND IT?
.
The owner of the copyrights for all these "other" works is the Church of Spiritual Technology, doing business as the "L. Ron Hubbard Library."
.....So they not only own all the original L. Ron Hubbard copyrights, they also own all the "new" versions, the "look-alike" versions--authored or co-authored by others, but being sold carrying the name of L. Ron Hubbard.
.....Few people have ever known anything about this "L. Ron Hubbard Library." Until now. But now a DEFAULT has been entered against them in a libel suit with a face value of $190 million. (If you haven't already been there, visit this link: What is Behind the L. Ron Hubbard Library?
.....But who are the people behind it? Who is doing it? The answer to that question very well may be Scientology's Greatest Secret
